On December 13, BCS held its 4th Annual Safety Rodeo consisting of seven simultaneous training stations. The day started at 6 a.m. with registration, coffee and hot chocolate, issuing colored bracelets to designate starting training station and safety yellow rodeo shirts provided by Texas Materials. Then workers were welcomed by OSHA Compliance Specialist Victor Ramon, San Antonio before performing their stretch and flex exercises in the foggy morning (hoping that the rain will hold off a few more hours—which it did.)

Workers moved every 25 minutes from one training station to the next, learning about the following from BCS’s Vendor/Trainers:
- Concrete Safety and Inspection-Texas Materials
- Hand Protection-Colony Hardware/Ironwear
- Material Handling/Rigging-White Construction
- Silica Control-Bosch Tools
- Fall Protection and Fall Rescue Plans-Falltech
- Ergonomics and Correct Lifting Techniques-Marsh McLennan Insurance
- Ladder Safety-Walsh Safety Consulting
After two training cycles, there was a mandatory taco/tamale break and then five more training cycles resumed, ending around 11:30 a.m. To conclude the training rodeo, a brief presentation about mental health was delivered to all BCS workers and then the rain started to get heavier. Fortunately, the tents provided by Marsh McLennan kept everyone dry.

Victor Ramon, OSHA, was impressed with the training and particularly liked the stations that emphasized Material Handling and Ladder Safety, “There has been an increase in safety violations and fatalities this year in both areas, so I was glad to see that BCS was providing this training for its’ workers. Overall, this was a great training event.”

The annual worker Christmas lunch and party followed the Safety Rodeo, and workers were entertained by music from live mariachis, games and a prize raffle.
