Jose Arturo Gonzalez or “Big Chepe” as he is known by most, has been the new Shop Manager at BCS for the past few months. He has come up through the BCS ranks working first for several years as a carpenter helper, carpenter and equipment operator and then started getting recognized for having a great attitude and being a team player. “I have tried to do my best for BCS and really appreciate the opportunities they have given me.”
Big Chepe was identified as an Emerging Leader last year excelling in the program designed to develop potential young leaders and show them all of the aspects of BCS operations, encouraging them to seek out a career as a Superintendent, Project Manager, Estimator or even Safety Professional.
When approached initially to be part of the Safety Team at BCS, Big Chepe was interested, but felt he needed to remain loyal to his General Superintendent, Leonel Perez, and keep working as a carpenter in the field. However, when the Shop Manager position became available, Big Chepe was a natural choice, not because of his experience in a warehouse, because he had none, but because of his infectious positive attitude, natural leadership skills and willingness to learn new things. Working in the BCS Shop is challenging, more than 20 Superintendents have daily delivery needs for equipment and materials, two Commerical Drivers have to be scheduled daily working the most efficient routes possible through Central Texas to make it to as many jobistes as possible each day, the shop team of laborers and mechanics have to be tasked the extensive material and equipment BCS owns have to been inventories, restocked and maintained. This is not easy to do well and the support of our office and the positive energy of our team, we are showing great progress over the past few months.
Every day we plan our work and make sure everyone knows what they are doing and they remember “Safety First,” according to Big Chepe.’ I wanted to be organized, professional and do the best we can for our field team. We treat the Shop as if it were a jobsite. We keep it clean, organized and safe. We work with our Vehicle Fleet Manger, Larry Thomas to ensure that our trucks and trailers are inspected daily and that we have zero accidents.”
If the past few months are indicative of the future, Big Chepe is off to a great start and he continues to exceed expectations on a daily basis.
