A project BCS was proud to be part of building has reached a historic moment for American nuclear energy.
Oklo’s Groves Isotope Test Reactor achieved first criticality for the very first time — the moment a reactor reaches a controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. It’s precise. It’s technical. And it matters.
BCS Concrete Structures is proud to have been part of building this project.
The Fastest Advanced Reactor Built in America
Constructed under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program, Groves is the fastest fully privately financed and built reactor project of its kind in the country — completed in less than a year. That timeline redefines what’s possible in advanced nuclear construction and offers a real blueprint for the reactors that will follow.
For decades, America has known how to achieve criticality. The harder challenge has been demonstrating how to deploy advanced reactor facilities repeatedly, at scale. Groves is proof it can be done.
Why This Reactor Matters
The isotopes Groves will produce are destined for some of the most important applications in modern science and medicine:
- Cancer treatment — advanced isotopes used in oncology therapies
- Medical imaging — diagnostic tools that save lives every day
- Space exploration — power and instrumentation for missions beyond Earth
- National security — critical isotopes supporting American defense
That’s the throughline that makes today special. The work that went into this reactor supports the medicine, science, and security of a generation.
Congratulations to the Groves Team
BCS extends congratulations to Oklo, the U.S. Department of Energy, and every partner and trade on the Groves project. Milestones like this belong to every person who lifted a hand on the build.
