It is popular today amongst top tier commercial construction companies (General Contractors and Subcontractors) to promote Job Site Safety and Zero Accidents as a distinguishing factor from competing Subcontractors trying to win a project bid. But beyond the bumper sticker slogans, many might wonder how this actually happens in the field? At BCS we start with OSHA training for all employees, 10 hour OSHA Construction Safety for new workers and 30 Hour for Supervisors and Project Managers. While we present and promote our safety program as Best in Class as recognized by both Texas Mutual and our new Amerisure, Surebuilt Captive, this success we combine with the wisdom and experience of owner Joel Garcia whose slogan Think Family! Think Safety! has created the BCS as a family business where everyone has the opportunity to establish their legacy. Then with OSHA’s 53 years of proven practices that keep workers safe we have the trifecta.
OSHA training can only be provided by qualified OSHA Outreach Traininers, BCS has Vice President Todd Smith, with more than 14 years experience providing new BCS employees on average more than 20 OSHA classes a year—all in Spanish. Smith discusses why OSHA training is so important to the BCS Safety Culture and how creating trust is the key to reduced jobsite injuries?
When workers come to BCS, they bring their work experience and a mix of limited or almost no formal safety training. Most have seen many injured coworkers and due to lack of training and do not understanding Workers Compensation Insurance from their experience Safety is more talk than action. BCS educates our employees from Day 1 and focuses on not only what a safety culture is but just how important safety is to our company. Proactive Injury Management and ongoing safety training throughout the year are new concepts to most of our employees as most have been at companies where production is everything and safety a minor issue or even non-existent in some cases. We reinforce Safety by showing our custom safety orientation video showing workers in the field working safely and owners talking about safety. Then we emphasize how safety and operations are inherently linked or the notion that “a safe job is a good job.” Next the OSHA training, uses mandatory topics as well as elective topics or BCS specific topics to draw further attention to how OSHA is good, but just the most minimal safety standard, at BCS we want to strive for Best Practice Safety. A Best Practice is where we use what we have learned in collaboration with our General Superintendents, Superintendents and PMs to go above and beyond in safety collaborating on how to protect our workers and provide value added safety to our General Contractors. They result of this process is trust and a positive safety climate—a relatively new term that describes how safety is perceived by workers at all levels of BCS and how employees feel about our safety culture.”
OSHA Safety training is an essential starting point for BCS employees to work safely. We can improve our technology, our building techniques and our marketing strategy, but at the end of the day it is our workers who make the difference as to why BCS is Best in Class and for us, OSHA training is where everything starts for us to take care of the BCS family and investing in training people is essential to the ongoing success of BCS.
