On December 12th, BCS held its 5th Annual Safety Rodeo consisting of eight simultaneous training stations. The day started at 6 a.m. with registration, coffee and hot chocolate, issuing colored bracelets to designate their starting training station. Rodeo shirts were provided by Texas Materials prior to performing their stretch and flex exercises to music in the foggy cool morning
Workers rotated every 25 minutes from one training station to the next, learning about the following from BCS’s Vendor/Trainers:
- Concrete Safety and Inspection-TexMix Concrete
- Drilling Safety-Sparta Drilling and Construction
- Concrete Form Building and Wrecking-Alsina
- Material Handling and Equipment Operation-Opifex
- Silica Control and Tool Safety-Bosch Tools
- Fall Protection-Falltech
- Carpentry
- Ladder Safety-Walsh Safety Consulting
After two training cycles, there was a mandatory taco break sponsored by Bosch and Falltech and then six more training cycles resumed, ending around 11:30 a.m. To conclude the training rodeo, a timed forklift operator competition was held. The top eight operators, selected by the trainers, competed on a course with deductions for hitting cones and knocking off tennis balls as well as automatic disqualification for hitting the green pedestrian warning signs. Mark Alvarez, Safety Director, White Construction, was impressed with the training and particularly liked the operator competition, “There has been an increase in safety violations and fatalities this year for equipment operators, so I was glad to see that BCS was providing this training for its’ workers. The competition for operators was competitive, and the entire company cheered on the participants.”

The annual worker Christmas lunch was sponsored by Parker Industries and a party followed the Safety Rodeo. Workers were entertained by music from a live music, a DJ, games and a prize raffle. As the event concluded, workers received Christmas tote bags filled with tools, PPE, Shirts, Caps and Vendor Swag.
