At BCS Concrete Structures, our boots are on the ground, but our eyes are always on the thermometer. With summer temperatures soaring, field safety isn’t just a compliance checklist—it is our daily mission. Concrete construction demands intense physical effort, making heat illness a real threat. To combat this, we have deployed a comprehensive heat stress prevention program across all jobsites to ensure every worker goes home safe and healthy.
In addition to ongoing training to recognize heat injury symptoms and emphasizing heat injury prevention, here is a look at the proactive measures keeping our team cool, hydrated, and energized on the job:
Changing the Schedule
Because the temperature is significantly cooler earlier in the day, many of our jobsites are starting work an hour earlier. This allows us to end the workday a little earlier and avoid the hottest temperatures of the day. We are scheduling more physically demanding work and concrete pours as early as possible in the day.
Mobile Shade Stations
We don’t wait for natural shade to appear on a busy job site which is sometime not even available. BCS utilizes dedicated, shade stations. These covered break areas give crews an immediate escape from direct sunlight, allowing body temperatures to drop during mandatory break periods.
Advanced Hydration
Water is vital, but sweating drains essential minerals that water alone cannot replace. To prevent cramping and heat exhaustion, we keep our sites fully stocked with Sqwencher powder drink packets and deliver cold Gatorades, a few times a week. These electrolyte-heavy supplements are easily mixed into water bottles, keeping our workers balanced and hydrated.
Jobsite Ice Freezers
On our largest jobsites, ice is a critical resource. We have installed dedicated ice freezers directly on-site. This ensures a limitless supply of ice to keep water bottles freezing cold, use cooling cloths, and provide instant relief when temperatures peak in the afternoon.
Friday Fruit Cup Deliveries
We like to wrap up a hard week of work with a healthy, cooling treat in the late summer. Every Friday afternoon in August, our safety and management teams will deliver chilled fruit cups directly to the crews. Packed with natural sugars, vitamins, and high-water content, these treats offer a great hydration boost and a well-deserved morale lift before the weekend.
Safety is a team effort. By combining advanced hydration, accessible shade, and a culture that prioritizes worker well-being, BCS Concrete Structures continues to build strong—and stay cool. Another reason we are Best in Class.
