On a recent hot November Friday, CSP and Safety Consultant Patrick J. Walsh conducted Rigger/Signaler qualification training for a group of 12 BCS employees. Walsh has been part of the BCS Safety Team for all the 20 years BCS has been in existence as a company. Rigger/Signaler training starts in the classroom and concentrates on many key principles used to ensure that rigging is done safely, include the lifting triangle, the effects of gravity and wind and communication between signaler and forklift or crane operator.

This training is a full day, and Walsh will not provide the training credential, unless the trainee has been able to demonstrate mastery of the classroom content by passing the written quizzes and exams and then goes on to show his ability to perform by actually rigging a load correctly and moving it as a qualified signaler.

Rigger/Signaler Training is not only an OSHA requirement but focuses on a critical element in BCS’s building process, that being Material Handling. Many injuries and property damage occur each year due to signalpersons’ lack of adequate communication with equipment operators, or by not using a qualified signalperson at all. Other hazards include dropping loads or severe injuries caused by crushing and struck by injuries. Rigger/Signaler qualification training is essential to keep BCS Concrete “Best In Class” in commercial concrete safety.

During the last 5 years, BCS has committed the time and expense to conduct more than 25 classes to qualify riggers and signalpersons. Many BCS employees have participated in repeat classes to advance their understanding of the key concepts, and to provide mentorship for the less experienced employees. “I am gratified by the level of professionalism shown by BCS employees, and by the consistent performance in the field by BCS employees entrusted with this important work,” Walsh said.
