New Equipment Operator Training Focuses on Practical Skills

BCS has been using the Genie training system with Genie certified trainers for their equipment operators for the past few years (Forklifts, Scissor Lifts, Boom Lifts. etc.  This program is an industry standard and has served BCS well as they have had few accidents based on equipment operator error.

Recently, there seems to be an increase in jobsites that have many obstacles, restricted areas and an excess of other equipment operating while BCS operators are in the same work area.  To enhance the practical skills of our equipment operators, we have developed a more extensive operator skills test.  This will be combined with a new written test and emphasize maneuvering forklifts and skid steers, with loads that provide a challenging obstacle course for operators to prove their skills.  Operators who fail the practical skills test will be given multiple opportunities to earn a passing score and the course configuration will be changed periodically as well as the series of questions asked of the operators regarding hypothetical situations at the end of the course.  Some questions of our operators include:

For example,

  • An operator hits an overhead powerline, what should he do?
  • An operator’s engine is suddenly on fire, what should he do?
  • An operator damages a gas line, what should he do?

BCS continues to improve its’ safety culture by reassessing how we train and how field situations show us where we need better focus our training.  Improved Operator Training is another example of why BCS is Best Class in Safety.
