The next generation of construction professionals recently received an insider look into the industry, courtesy of leadership from BCS Concrete Structures. Senior Project Manager Reed Boyd and Director of Field Operations Leonel Perez visited students at the Crockett High School/Austin Community College (ACC) Dual Credit Program to present on the vast career opportunities in commercial concrete and the paramount importance of jobsite safety.

Reed Boyd brought a project management perspective to the classroom. He outlined the distinct career paths available within commercial construction and emphasized the absolute necessity of jobsite safety protocols. Boyd highlighted how planning, open communication, and rigorous adherence to safety standards serve as the bedrock for every successful BCS project.
Boyd also talked about how got into construction, his first job and quoted Steven Hesch, who said “The job of a Project Manager is to make sure everyone in the field has everything they need to do their job.”
During the interactive sessions, Leonel Perez shared his extensive firsthand field experience, shifting the focus from textbook theory to real-world applications. He engaged the juniors and seniors in detailed discussions regarding concrete ordering processes, precise project estimating, and managing complex labor issues on active jobsites. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and actual field execution, Perez provided the students with a transparent view of what a fulfilling career working with a subcontractor can be.
Perez remembers going to work with his father and learning about concrete and life in construction. He emphasized the importance of work ethic, integrity and completing quality work. He said that his father always told him, “Do the best job you can no matter the pay. The money will eventually come.”

The presentation concluded with a dynamic question-and-answer session, giving the ambitious dual-credit students an invaluable opportunity to receive mentorship from proven industry leaders.
